An Amalekite Reports Saul and Jonathan's Death

2 Samuel 1:1-16

1
Chapter 1
1 And it came after the death of Saul, and David returned from striking Amalek, and David dwelt in Ziklag two days. 2 And it was on the third day, and behold, a man came from the camp of Saul, with his garments torn and earth on his head. And it was when he came to David that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself. 3 He said to him, "David, where have you come from?" And he said to him, "I have escaped from the camp of Israel." 4 David said to him, "What happened? Please tell me." He said, "The people fled from the battle, and many of the people fell and died. Also, Saul and his son Jonathan died." 5 David said to the young man who was telling him, "How did you know that Saul and his son Jonathan had died?" 6 And the youth who was telling him said, "I happened upon it at Mount Gilboa, and there was Saul leaning on his spear, and there the chariots and the lords of the horsemen had surrounded him." 7 He turned behind him and saw me and called to me. And he said, "Here I am." 8 And he said to me, "Who are you?" And I said to him, "I am an Amalekite." 9 And he said to me, "Please stand over me and put me to death, for seizure has seized me, though all the while my nephesh is still in me." 10 I stood over him and killed him, for I knew that he would not survive after his fall. I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and I brought them to my lord. Here they are. 11 And David took hold of himself in his garments and tore them, and also all the men who were with him. 12 And they mourned and wept and fasted until the evening over Saul and over Jonathan his son and over the people of the LORD and over the house of Israel because they had fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man who told him, "Where are you from?" He said, "I am the son of a sojourner, an Amalekite." 14 And David said to him, "How were you not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the anointed of the LORD?" 15 David called one of the young men and said, "Come here and strike him." So he struck him, and he died. 16 And David said to him, "Your blood be on your own head, because your own mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I myself caused the anointed of the LORD to die.'"
